This manual describes the role in U.S. oil production of improved recovery—the production of oil not recoverable by conventional primary production methods. It introduces four improved recovery methods—waterflooding, gas injection, chemical flooding, and thermal recovery. It also provides a nontechnical description of the subsurface processes by which these methods displace oil, and it evaluates their present development and future use.
